CVFF Assists at Independence Day Celebration
The Cherokee Firefighters assisted the Rescue Squad at the 2010 Independence Day Celebration by providing fire protection coverage for the Fireworks Show that concludes the evening. This year's show lasted approximately 28 minutes! You can view the videos of the show by clicking HERE.
May 17, 2010:
Vehicle strikes pole, no one injured
Firefighters responded to a one-vehicle accident today around noon. The vehicle, a Ford Explorer, left the roadway and struck a utility pole. No one was injured in the accident. Fire units secured the scene until utility crews could replace the pole and wires.
May 8, 2010:
Child struck by vehicle
At 1335 hours, Cherokee Fire and Cherokee Rescue responded to 8th Street for a child struck by a vehicle. The accident happened in the driveway of a residence. The patient was transported to a landing zone at the football practice field, where it was flown to Huntsville by Air Evac 16.
May 8, 2010:
Vehicle rolls over on Natchez Trace
Fire units responded to a rollover accident around 1204 hours today on the Natchez Trace Parkway near the Smokey Road overpass. The vehicle was found on its driver side. No one was injured in the accident. The Natchez Trace Parkway Rangers are investigating.
April 9, 2010:
Three flown from wreck scene
Three people were injured and all three were flown from a wreck scene overnight on Highway 72 just west of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The head-on collision occured just before 11:30 pm. Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 72 were shut down for most of the night due to the accident and the number of emergency vehicles at the scene.
One person was entrapped and the extrication took over an hour due to the severity of the accident. All patients were conscious when they left the scene, and were flown to Huntsville Hospital via Air Evac Lifeteam helicopters. Cherokee Fire, Riverton Fire, Cherokee Rescue, Keller EMS, Cherokee Police, Colbert County SO, and Alabama State Troopers responded to the scene. No responders were injured. Units were on the scene for approximately 3 hours.
April 6, 2010:
Home, car destroyed in blaze
Firefighters responded to a fully-involved mobile home fire Tuesday afternoon around 2:52 pm. Upon arrival, units also found a vehicle behind the structure also involved in the fire. Cherokee firefighters were assisted by Barton Fire at the scene, and units from Oakland Fire and Riverton Fire provided coverage for the town while the fire was in progress. Cherokee Rescue provided medical standby and rehab.
The home and car were completely destroyed in the fire. No one was injured.
April 5, 2010:
Garage damaged in fire
What started out as a small grass fire quickly turned into a garage fire Monday evening around 6:30pm. Firefighters responded to 1801 Riverton Rose Trail to find a garage partially involved in fire, as well as the surrounding vegetation. The fire was quickly extinguished. No one was injured in the blaze.
February 27, 2010:
Wildfire near Lime Kiln
The Alabama Forestry Commission Airplane spotted a fire in the Lime Kiln area just west of Cherokee this afternoon. Firefighters from Cherokee were requested to assist in locating the fire and help extinguish the blaze. Firefighters located the fire in the 800 block of Mill Creek Loop and had to go into the area on foot. The forestry dozer arrived and cut a line around the burn area. No structures were involved and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is unknown.
February 21, 2010:
House destroyed in blaze
Firefighters responded to a fully involved structure fire this morning around 0642 hours on Gibbs Ln. Upon arrival, fire was showing from all sides of the structure. The occupants were at home at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely. Cherokee Fire was assisted by Barton, Riverton, Hwy 247, and Oakland Fire Departments. Cherokee Rescue provided medical standby and rehab. Units were on scene approximately 4 hours.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured in the blaze.
February 20, 2010:
Explorer Program developed for Youth
The CVFF has developed an Explorer Program for the youth in our community to be able to become involved in volunteering with the Fire Department. While child labor laws prevent the youth from doing things such as actual structure firefighting, there are some things they are able to help out with around the station and at some scenes. February 19, 2010:
Car collides with bus, 1 dead
A small car collided with a bus Friday afternoon on Highway 72 near the 14 mile marker. The vehicle ran into and underneath the rear of the bus, just after the bus had dropped a student off and was about to start moving again. The driver of the vehicle was killed, while 2 students ont the bus had minor injuries. The bus driver was not injured. Initially, the car was smoking and bystanders were able to control the fire until the Fire Department arrived. Barton Fire requested assistance from Locust Shores Fire and Cherokee Fire for their extrication tools. Cherokee Rescue transported the 2 injured students, and Keller EMS and Air Evac 16 were also on the scene. Colbert County Sheriff's Department and Cherokee PD provided traffic control while the Alabama State Troopers worked the accident. The entire highway was shut down due to the incident, and the numerous emergency vehicles at the scene. Traffic was rerouted over to Old Lee Hwy.
Oakland Fire, from Lauderdale County, sent an engine over to standby in Cherokee Fire district while our units were tied up. No responders were injured at the scene. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Photos courtesy of Daniel Giles and Jim Hannon, both of the TimesDaily.
February 19, 2010:
Barn, Tractor burns
What started out as a controlled brush fire quickly got out of control and spread to a nearby barn, which was housing a tractor, a jeep, and several drums of fuel. Firefighers responded to this fire in the 3000 block of Allsboro Rd around 1350 hours Friday. Firefighters from Cherokee, Rose Trail, and Barton worked feverishly to control the fire, while shielding themselves from the exploding drums of fuel. Cherokee Rescue performed medical standby and rehab for the firefighters.
No one was injured in the blaze. Approximately 3000 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam were used to extinguish the fire. Forestry was also called to assist with the brush fire portion. Fire units had to leave the scene of the fire to respond to a MVC in Barton.
January 16, 2010:
Abandoned house destroyed in blaze
Firefighters responded to a fully-involved structure fire just before noon today on North Pike near Smokey Road. Upon arrival of the first engine, the structure was already on the ground. The structure had no utilities, and had not been lived in for quite some time. Firefighters dumped approximately 1500 gallons of water on the fire, then left the remaining fire to burn inside the burn area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Cherokee Rescue provided medical standby for the event.
January 14, 2010:
Kitchen Fire Prevention
If a pan catches on fire on your stove, follow these steps to extinguish the fire. 1. Turn off the stove. 2. Wet a cloth in the sink. 3. Place the wet cloth over the pan. This will smother the fire. NEVER try to move the pan or throw water onto the pan. The results can be devestating. Click on the picture to the left to view the video.
January 9, 2010:
One dies in wreck
A female driver was killed around 1730 hours today when her car veered off the Natchez Trace Parkway and landed upside down in Bear Creek. Fire, rescue, EMS, EMA, Dive Team, Law, and wrecker crew members all worked for nearly 3 hours trying to remove the car from the creek. Extreme cold temperatures and icy conditions hampered efforts. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Natchez Trace Parkway Rangers.
January 2, 2010:
Firefighter Injured in Crash
A CVFF firefighter was injured in a minor MVC today on Highway 72 near Lair Ln. The firefighter's vehicle appeared to have been rear-ended. He was taken to Keller Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
